Before the match against Hungary in the second round of Group A at Euro 2024, German national team coach Nagelsmann was very confident about his team’s chances of winning.

In their opening match of Euro 2024, the German team, playing at home, started off well with a dominant 5-1 victory over Scotland. Conversely, Hungary suffered a 1-3 defeat against Switzerland. Therefore, coach Nagelsmann was quite confident going into the second round of matches.

Speaking to the media, the 36-year-old strategist said, “We will challenge and win against Hungary, just as we did against Scotland.”

“Hungary is under more pressure than us after the first match. I believe they will play more fiercely than they did against Switzerland, as the risk of elimination from the tournament weighs heavily on them. We have studied Hungary thoroughly and have a clear strategy to implement our game plan to win tomorrow’s match. After watching their first match against Switzerland, we recognize that Hungary deserves a better result than what they achieved.”

coach Nagelsmann also acknowledged Hungary’s strengths in counter-attacks and transitions but emphasized that the outcome “depends on how we, the German team, approach the game.” He added, “They have a clear attacking system that gives us opportunities if we defend well but also poses risks if our defense is weak.”

Germany has not won in their last three encounters with Hungary, including a 2-2 draw at Euro 2020 in Munich.

Hungary has not been able to defeat Germany in a competitive match since 1954 when the underdog Hungarian team, led by Ferenc Puskas, defeated West Germany in the World Cup final.

According to statistics, Hungary has gone through seven consecutive Euro matches without a win (4 draws, 3 losses) since their 2-0 victory against Austria in the group stage of Euro 2016. However, they still have a fairly impressive record against Germany.
