Recently, Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton took a stand to defend Bukayo Saka, who faced racial discrimination following England’s defeat to Iceland.

In the final friendly match before Euro 2024, England suffered a humiliating loss to Iceland, and the blame for this defeat fell on star player Bukayo Saka. Despite only playing the last 25 minutes of the match, the 23-year-old player was subjected to racial abuse from “Three Lions” fans.

Witnessing this issue, Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton shared a post on Instagram defending Saka and other players of color, while also addressing this troubling issue.

The post read: “We need to hold the British media accountable for perpetuating the vilification of players of color. The constant scapegoating of players of color needs to end. This systemic racism has no place in football, yet numerous media outlets continue to do the opposite….

This is not the first time Saka has been targeted with abuse while representing the England national team. Just three years ago, along with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, he faced racial discrimination for missing a penalty in the Euro final at home. Over time, we have seen black players of the England team being attacked and dehumanized systematically by the media…

They should be treated with the same respect and care as their white teammates.”

Indeed, this is not the first time Saka and his compatriots have faced racial discrimination. In the Euro 2020 final, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka all missed penalty kicks, leading to England losing the championship to Italy.

Immediately after, all three players faced the wrath of English fans, receiving waves of criticism and racial discrimination without mercy. The issue of racial discrimination not only exists in England but also stems from many top football nations in Europe such as Spain, Italy, and France.
