The Polish national team seems to be sitting on a tinderbox as captain Lewandowski suffers injury and has to leave the field in a friendly match against Turkey.

Early this morning, the Polish national team played their final friendly match against Turkey before heading to Germany. Three points came to coach Michał Probierz’s team as Poland secured a last-minute 2-1 victory. However, the joy was not complete as Lewandowski faced an injury just before Euro 2024.

Team captain Robert Lewandowski had to leave the field in this match, the Barcelona forward departing with an apparent thigh issue after 32 minutes of play. The situation became more complicated when forward Karol Swiderski was also substituted after sustaining an ankle injury while celebrating the opening goal in the 12th minute.

Speaking after the match about Lewandowski’s injury, Polish head coach confirmed: “Robert Lewandowski sustained a minor injury. We hope there won’t be any problems.”

Lewandowski’s injury will be a huge disadvantage for Poland. On Sunday (June 16), Poland will begin their Euro campaign against the Netherlands.

The Oranje had a perfect warm-up as they defeated Iceland 4-0 in their final friendly match in Rotterdam. Xavi Simons, Virgil Van Dijk, Donyell Malen, and Wout Weghorst were the goalscorers.

The Netherlands is considered superior to Poland in Group D, which also includes France and Austria. It’s clear that Poland needs to aim for at least a point against the Netherlands to keep their hopes alive, at least for the third-place team with the best group stage record.

There are still five days for Lewandowski to recover, and the return of the Barcelona star will undoubtedly be the biggest morale boost for Poland in the upcoming matches.
