Mr. McKenna was appointed as the head coach of Ipswich Town in December 2021. After two seasons in charge, the Northern Irish strategist excellently helped the Suffolk-based team achieve back-to-back promotions, from EFL League One to the Championship and then from the Championship to the Premier League, for the first time since 2002.

Prior to that, Coach McKenna had a spell in the coaching staff at Old Trafford. In the 2016/17 season, he was the head coach of the Manchester United U18 team, while also serving as a scout for the first team.

After two seasons with the U18 team, Mr. McKenna was appointed as the assistant first-team coach for Manchester United from 2018 to 2021. During this time, he had the opportunity to work alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (168 games), Jose Mourinho (24 games), Ralf Rangnick (3 games), and Michael Carrick (3 games).

Manchester United is not the only Premier League club seeking the services of the 38-year-old captain. Brighton has also made moves to approach the Ipswich Town manager, in case Roberto De Zerbi moves to Serie A this summer.

The Northern Irish coach signed a new contract with Ipswich Town last summer and still has three years left on his contract until the summer of 2027 with the East Anglian club.
