Defender Scalvini diagnosed with torn ACL after match against Fiorentina, within the rescheduled round 38 of Serie A 2023/24.
As feared, Giorgio Scalvini has suffered a severe injury, tearing his ACL in his left knee during the match against Fiorentina on June 2nd. This issue will come at a heavy cost for him. According to Ansa, Scalvini’s expected recovery time is between 5 to 6 months.
The defender will undergo surgery in the coming days. In the match against Fiorentina, he scored a goal but had to leave the field after an unnatural movement of the joint.
Scalvini’s long-term absence is likely to force Atalanta to reconsider their transfer market plans as they seek a replacement. The club had previously acquired Isak Hien from Verona in January, which helped them cope with numerous absences in defense.
Returning from a serious thigh injury, Sead Kolasinac is also absent in the final months of the year.
Italy will miss their second center-back after Francesco Acerbi, who is sidelined from Euro 2024 due to racial discrimination. Meanwhile, coach Luciano Spalletti is also contemplating excluding Francesco Gatti.
The only remaining options at center-back for Italy are Alessandro Bastoni, Alessandro Buongiorno, and Gianluca Mancini.
Clearly, Giorgio Scalvini encountered misfortune in what was a rather meaningless match, and fans hope for a swift and obstacle-free recovery process.
Heading into Euro 2024, Italy remains an enigma with a blend of established stars who secured victory four years ago, complemented by talented and passionate young players promising an intriguing and anticipated spectacle.
