Premier League legends – Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, and Jamie Carragher have all criticized the England national team without mercy following their disappointing draw against Denmark at Euro 2024.
At Euro 2024, England had a less than stellar start, earning only 4 points from their first 2 matches in Group C. Their performances have been underwhelming, leading to widespread disappointment among fans and football experts, including former Premier League stars like Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, and Jamie Carragher.
In their opening match, England narrowly won 1-0 against Serbia, but it was a lackluster and unconvincing display. Manager Gareth Southgate’s team struggled to create scoring opportunities and failed to add to their early goal.
In the second match, England could only manage a 1-1 draw against Denmark. Although Harry Kane opened the scoring, they completely lost control of the game thereafter. Morten Hjulmand’s Denmark equalized with a beautiful long-range strike, and England failed to create many dangerous chances for the rest of the match.
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender, didn’t hold back in his criticism, stating on social media X, “Euro 2024 has been great, but England have featured in two of the worst matches so far.”
Roy Keane, former Manchester United midfielder, also expressed dissatisfaction with England’s performance. On ITV Sport, Keane commented, “I didn’t see the courage and fighting spirit in the last game. There’s something not right with the balance. Bellingham is waving his arms. This is a big challenge for Gareth Southgate. It seems like he’s overthinking.”
Gary Neville, another Manchester United legend, gave a pessimistic outlook for the rest of the tournament, highlighting the surplus of talent as a hurdle. Neville said, “Southgate will face a lot of pressure in the coming days. We expected them to win, but for the first time, I see him conflicted with the possession of this abundance of talent.”
Rio Ferdinand, former Manchester United and England defender, also criticized Harry Kane’s first-half performance against Denmark. He told BBC Sport, “If I were a coach, I’d be crazy about Harry Kane. I would shout. I can’t accept my center-forward not playing with as much energy as other players.”
After two matches, England left an impression of dull play, lack of energy, and lack of attacking ideas. Coach Southgate once again faced criticism for his overly cautious approach, which has left English fans dissatisfied in the past. Additionally, the experiment with Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield has yet to yield the expected results.
England will have one final group stage match against Slovenia on the early morning of Wednesday, June 26th at the RheinEnergieStadion. This will be their last chance to improve their form and maintain their position at the top of Group C.
Southgate and his players need timely adjustments to tactics and gameplay to regain confidence from fans and pundits alike. Only then can England progress further at Euro 2024 and fulfill their ambition of winning their first-ever European Championship title.
