The misfortune and bad luck of Romelu Lukaku have become the most discussed topic among football fans after the Belgian national team suffered a bitter defeat against Slovakia in their opening match of Euro 2024.

Belgium had a performance that couldn’t have been worse in their Euro 2024 debut, suffering a bitter defeat against Slovakia. Despite dominating possession throughout the game, missing golden opportunities led the Red Devils to experience the harsh reality of football, going empty-handed against a seemingly inferior Slovakia team.

Throughout the match, Romelu Lukaku was undoubtedly the most attention-grabbing figure. What drew fans’ attention to the Belgian striker wasn’t his performance on the field, but rather his inexplicable misses and the misfortune that haunted him throughout the 90 minutes on the pitch.

Specifically, the 31-year-old forward missed at least two clear opportunities in the first half, along with having two goals disallowed in the second half, indirectly resulting in Belgium leaving the field empty-handed. In the first instance of the ball hitting the net, Lukaku unfortunately fell into an offside position.

Immediately after, the Chelsea striker confidently put the ball into Slovakia’s net with a decisive and beautiful shot. However, the misfortune became even more evident when his teammate, Luis Openda, was deemed to have handled the ball before providing the “missed assist” for his shot.

Witnessing Lukaku’s performance, fans couldn’t hide their emotions.

One person said, “Too unlucky for Belgium, Slovakia must have hit the jackpot tonight. Talent refused two clear goals, bitter indeed.”

The second person said, “VAR has a grudge against Belgium and Mr. Black Lukaku!”

The third person remarked, “It’s not for nothing that when you mention LUKAKU, people immediately think of bad luck!! One way or another.”

The fourth person shared, “Is Luk still fit or not? Why not replace him? Perhaps when he’s substituted, luck will come.”

The fifth person humorously said, “To find valuable wood at sea, contact Lukaku!”

Facing Slovakia, Belgium quickly pressed from the early minutes with chances created by conductor De Bruyne. However, unable to convert those chances into goals, Domenico Tedesco’s team paid the price when Slovakia’s Ivan Schranz scored. In the subsequent minutes, the Red Devils exerted all their strength to seek an equalizer. However, Slovakia’s resilience and a bit of luck helped them maintain the advantage until the final minutes, securing a surprising 1-0 victory.

Slovakia’s win placed them in second position in Group E, temporarily behind Romania. Meanwhile, Belgium will have to put in a lot of effort in the remaining two matches if they want to at least advance from the group stage.
